Actually, you wrote down 'need fllet codes' (sic), so it is now wonder the person didn't understand what you meant!
Why do they NEED fleet codes?
They NEED fleet codes so that each vehicle is distinguishable from eachother
I don't think you understand the difference between a NUMERIC fleet NUMBER and an ALPHA-NUMERIC fleet CODE and sequence number.
But in any case the word NEED is incorrect, desire, possibly.
All motor vehicles (including buses, but excluding trams, which are classed as a light railway for legal purposes) have to carry a DVLA issued registration. It is totally unique within the UK, and can be used.
Many companies DO just use the DVLA registration for identity purposes, so NEED does not enter into it!
A fleet code is a NUMERIC fleet NUMBER and an ALPHA-NUMERIC fleet CODE and sequence number!
Now I'm confused.
You're going round in circles bickering over the differences between alpha-numeric numeric fleet code sequence numbers and totally ignoring the actual question. I'm genuinely interested to hear your (and others) answer to my question, I'm not interested to hear another argument about an irrelevant defintition.
TO CLARIFY.
I am asking: Why is it that different operators use different letter-codes to identify the same type of vehicle.

Or am I banging my head against a brick wall...
I think you are James....
My only answer to that would be "because there twats".
Pointless jumps to mind?.....
Moving on quickly from THAT! , I was answering Bighat's incorrect post.I also think it would have been clarified the answer earlier one , all this 'malarkey'! Simple answer , take Arriva , all volvo geminis WLV , all daf geminis are DW ,all ALX200 are ADL , there is no such thing as a different fleet number for an exact same type of vehicle within a single operator , tell me if you want me to CLARIFY

The point was, on NR, 66101 could be with Freightliner, but 66501 could be with EWS - whatever company they are with they keep the same class "66".
Bus operators seem to all have there own numbering system with different letters...
The Dart 66 Blue Triangle thing (thats there new name ) that I was on this morning was DP197, the same type of bus on 366 with Stagecoach would be totally different IIRC.

Yes, you certainly DO need to clarify.
For starters, NOWHERE has the phrase 'within a single operator' been mentioned before.
Secondly, Arriva's Volvo B7TL Eclipse Geminis are class VLW (NOT WLV)
Thirdly, class DW. Numbers 1-50 ARE made under the DAF name, but 51-134 are manufacturered by VDL!
Fourthly, a new series, starting at DW201 are Wrightbus integral Gemini 2 DL's. Deliveries via Fleetwood Docks as far as DW236 have taken place up to today.
Now THAT is CLARITY.
'Malarkey' does NOT substitute for FACTUAL ACCURACY!
